Noting that North Carolina is a “control” state which prohibits private retail liquor sales, the resolution says this was the intent of city voters when they gave approval for the Mount Airy ABC Store in the late 1970s. which favors maintaining the present system. The Mount Airy Board of Commissioners is scheduled to vote on a resolution during a meeting Thursday at 2 p.m. While momentum seems to be growing around the state toward ABC privatization, city officials are resisting that effort. Proposed changes also would reduce the number of local ABC boards, now numbering about 170, in order to minimize costs and maximize profits. Some state legislators and a trade group, the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association, consider the present system outmoded and support a shift to a market-based approach that would treat liquor the same as other alcoholic beverages sold. Of that sum, $8,060 was restricted for law enforcement and $7,259 for recreation purposes. It is one of more than 430 ABC stores in the state and generates revenues for the city government from profits.įor the 2017-2018 fiscal year, a total of $131,470 was received, according to Finance Director Pam Stone. That includes Mount Airy’s lone liquor store on Starlite Road, which opened in 1979. North Carolina is one of 17 states with direct control over the sale and distribution of spirits, which includes operating a state warehouse where wholesale liquor from distillers is shipped to ABC stores. A bill seeking to modernize state ABC laws also would permit localities to adopt ordinances for liquor stores to sell beverages on Sunday. General Assembly that would make sweeping changes in that system, including allowing sales of liquor at retail establishments already providing beer and wine. Proposed legislation has surfaced in the N.C.
